In a press release, the museum announced that John Madden Football, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy VII, and Spacewar! were selected from a field of 12 finalists to enter the Video Game Hall of Fame. The award is determined via a Player’s Choice ballot and an advisory board comprised of scholars, journalists, and video game historians.
Games accepted into the hall must be iconic, have stood the test of time, and have worldwide appeal. For instance, John Madden Football from 1990 has influenced not just sports games, but sports in general. Tomb Raider defined a new style of gameplay that combined a revolutionary 3D viewpoint with cinematic action and puzzle solving.
